I love Fall and most of all- rich Fall hair color.  Brunettes are my favorite and I am loving glossing all my gorgeous brunettes with every shade of chocolate under the sun.  Milk chocolate, dark chocolate and caramels have so much warmth and allow dark hair to shine.  Pick a flavor and indulge!

Contrast can be the key to a natural looking sun-kissed highlight, and I am loving Jennifer Lopez’s high-contrast color in this photo! The contrast peaks through the ends of her hair, and it looks great on her!  The honey and wheat tones are spread strategically throughout her hair adding texture and movement to her hair while definitely catching the eye.  These tones are warm but not brassy, and they are certainly best on brunettes.  Don’t worry though, if you want this look you can have it without an extended root! It’s your choice! Lopez is certainly pushing the contrast to the limits in this photo, but she definitely pulls off and it looks amazing.

Although we have seen a lot of the braid craze over the past several years, I am definitely still feeling it!  They are still popping up all over the runways and red carpet.  But, just like everything else they have to evolve to keep up.  Here are a few photos of  some braids that are in right now.  There are also a few classic styles that are here to stay.   My favorite part about the braid craze?  They’re perfect for ANY occasion, they can be dressed up or down SO easily!   Try a fishtail for revamp on your current side braid.  Or try braiding your bangs to the side for a polished trendy look in seconds!

I hear a lot of people saying their hair color fades fast or their hair style isn’t easy to replicate, or they feel dry and over processed.

Ok- think of your hair as an investment. Like your car or a pair of designer shoes. You take really good care of that stuff- right? So why not your hair and skin?!

Maintenance is key! To keep your maintenance “low-maintenance”, finding the right salon is 1/2 the battle. This will ensure you are teamed up with the right stylist/colorist. Finding the perfect haircare professional is almost a guarantee that you’ll love everything about your hair, and so will everyone else. You and your stylists visions, likes/dislikes, and goals for your overall hair style should be similar- if not, move on to the next one. In the end, you will definitely be paying top-dollar for top-notch hair stylists and colorists but the level of talent is reflected in the price. Just as the quality of those Louboutins is relative to the $1000 price tag.

Also keep in mind that your love affair with your world-class new stylist or colorist may end up costing you less in the long run. With the right experience and education, these professionals can come up with creative solutions to keep your salon visits to a minimum.

Bringing pictures with you to your haircut or color appointment is so important!  It will help you and your hair care professional understand what color or style you are going for.

Remember, the color or cut you’re in-visioning could be completely different than the way you are describing it, or we are interpreting it.  Terminology can get twisted and confusing and above all- hard to explain.  Visuals are different.  It eliminates any room for miss-communication.

Always keep in mind- even when bringing in photos, your service provider may not be able to replicate the photo exactly.  Your hair may be a different texture, length or color. Should Men color their hair?

The idea of the metro-sexual is not a new concept, just a new moniker for a very old truth.  When it comes to hair men tend to be more vain than women.  It is understood in the salon business that men are more particular clients than women, especially when it comes to coloring their grays.  It is of vital importance to them that it is as natural as possible so that the women don’t notice, and so that their friends won’t poke fun at them.  But has anyone asked themselves… should they be coloring in the first place?

When I asked my female clients what they thought of men with gray hair, eighty percent of them said that men should let their hair go gray.  They thought the “silver fox” look was distinguished, and sexy.  Men who color their hair could seem conceit.

The other twenty percent thought it would be okay to color if you’re under 30 years old, but not over.  It goes without saying that coloring one’s hair can take 10 years off of your look. They also thought it depended on the type of person sporting the gray.  Anderson Cooper or Richard Geare look great grey, while Johnny Depp or Brad Pitt they thought should definitely color.  The statistic also depended on the age of the women.  Women 20’s to 40’s like salt and pepper, while women 50+ said “color it!”

As a man I’m finding that I like my speckled grays, but as a colorist I think that “grey blending” is an excellent option for men that have gone from salt and pepper, to mostly salt.  A professional colorist should always be consulted when deciding to do a “grey blending” as they will choose the right color and application technique for your hair type and percentage of gray.  With my clients I always leave the temples and sideburns out as it leaves a more natural look.

We are currently living in a world where men are allowed to care about how they look and youth is more coveted than ever.  As we age, we start to miss that fresh face in the mirror.  Our aging looks betray the youthful person we feel we are inside.  Blending your grays is a quick fix to returning to that guy you want the rest of the world to see.  My male clients that blend their grays can attest to that.
